1. Location / surroundings

Arusha is one of the larger urban areas in Tanzania, beautifully situated on the outer slopes of Mt Meru, circa 100 km south of the border with Kenya. Due to its central location and its infrastructure, Arusha forms your natural starting point for a safari to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara or Tarangire. It is also a good starting place for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro [5895m] or Mt Meru [4560m]. The Arusha National Park is a small but very nice National Park that is situated very close to the Arusha town area. Arusha has an interesting history as regional center for many peace initiatives (it welcomed both former Presidents Clinton and Mandela in recent years) and hosts the UN international criminal tribunal for Rwanda.
Kigongoni Lodge is located 15 minutes driving from the centre of Arusha on the way to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Situated on the hilltop of an old coffee farm, away from the town noise in a tranquil, green setting, it has splendid views on Mt Meru and – on a clear day – Mt Kilimanjaro.

2. Facilities

Tucked between the trees are eighteen spacious cottages, built in traditional African styles and materials. Each of the 18 guest cottages has a private verandah, surrounded by the indigenous vegetation of the old farm and with great views of Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro. The rooms, bar and restaurant - all with fireplaces - are furnished in an intimate and comfortable manner, maximizing the site’s unique views and natural features. The rooms have large king-size beds or twin beds. An extra single bed can be arranged. All rooms are equipped with mosquito nets.

Kigongoni Lodge is known for its food. Chef Peter Mukusyo kindly welcomes you for a delicious meal in Kigongoni’s intimate restaurant, fusing European kitchen with African elements. Many of the ingredients Peter uses are homegrown. Finish your meal with a cup of coffee that is made of the coffee that is grown at the farm. Or start the day with an early morning coffee and/or tea at your private veranda. For those who wish to get in touch with the rest of the world, Kigongoni has internet facilities and telephone/fax services.

Come to rest after your journey in Kigongoni’s garden or its swimming pool, overlooking the green slopes of Mt Meru, or enjoy a drink in our bar. Staying with us at Kigongoni will give you an authentic, homely experience and true sense of Tanzania, while providing an opportunity to participate in activities that contribute to the development of local communities (see “Sibusiso Foundation” below).

3. Activities

Kigongoni Lodge offers nature walks, guided by knowledgeable local guides, through its own 70 acres premises and beyond. Horse riding and canoeing can be arranged upon request, as well as forest lunches or breakfast. Just back from a dusty safari, a refreshing dive in the swimming pool is a must.
For those who wish to learn more about daily African life, visits to the neighboring village can be arranged. Our guides and the staff of Sibusiso Foundation (see below) are happy to show you around the center for mentally disabled children. We also arrange visits to Arusha National Park, the Arusha central market, the UN international criminal tribunal for Rwanda and the local snake park.

4. Sibusiso Foundation

Kigongoni Lodge is a unique example of how international tourism can benefit/be beneficial to the local African community. The Sibusiso Foundation, a center for improving the quality of life for mentally disabled children and their families, has its home adjacent to the lodge and directly benefits from its revenues. To date, Sibusiso has trained over 600 disabled children and their parents how to best help themselves (see http://www.sibusiso.com for more information). If you are interested, we invite you for a visit to the clinic during your stay at Kigongoni Lodge.

5. Weddings and honeymoons

Candle lit private dinners, Champagne breakfast, a romantic honeymoon suite with flowers everywhere…Kigongoni offers special honeymoon packages with all that honeymooners could wish for. On top of that, Kigongoni can arrange weddings in the middle indigenous garden of its 70 acre coffee farm. Honeymoon packages can include other Asilia destinations to create an unforgettable honeymoon in Tanzania, combining an exclusive and intimate safari with a romantic stay at Matemwe Bungalows, enjoying Zanzibar’s most beautiful beaches.
