Tented Adventure 2 - Laikipia, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara

Explore the Laikipia plateau in central Kenya: vast open ranches, shadowed by the snow-capped Mount Kenya and the largest elephant population in Kenya. Trek through the vast bushlands of Laikipia with a traditional Samburu camel caravan. Experience the magic of Lake Nakuru in the heart of the Rift Valley. Finally you end up in the majestic Masai Mara with its open savannah with it’s tremendous amount of game and the live culture of the Purko Masai. This is a trip for you who want to explore “The real Kenya”.
Day 1 Drive to El Karama and set up camp at a private site along Ewaso Nyiro river. Enjoy this beautiful private ranch /conservation areas with day/night drives and walks. Game that can be seen includes elephant, giraffe, large herds of eland, all plains game, Grevy's zebra, lion, cheetah, black and white rhino.
Day 2 Bush Camp at El Karama. Day/night drives and walks.
Day 3 After a morning walk or drive and breakfast you will drive to the start of the camel trek on Ol Donyo Lemburo ranch in the heart of Laikipia. Meet your Samburu guides and have lunch before heading off for the afternoon walk. The camel will carry all equipment as well as luggage. First Camp will be set by the waterfall on Sosian Ranch. You stay in comfortable dome tents with camping beds and proper linen. Toilet and shower units as well a dinning is also set up. Dinner and stories by the campfire under the African sky.
Day 4 Full day trekking. Half of the camel team will go on ahead to set up the camp for the night while you will ride and walk at a comfortable pace looking for game and enjoying the nature. Elephants are plenty in the area so close elephant encounters are very likely. Camp for the evening will be set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro. Dinner and overnight at your private bush camp.
Day 5 - After breakfast, your driver - guide will come and pick you from the campsite and your drive down into the Great Rift Valley will start. The drive is fairly long but very scenic and you can stop enroute and visit the local markets and wood carving kiosks if you wish. Arrive at the Nakuru Mbweha Lodge on the Delemere Estate in time for a late lunch. We will here stay at the lodge to get a small break from bush camps and enjoy the added luxury of staying in comfortable en suite cottages. Do a guided nature walk in this privately owned Congreve conservancy in the afternoon then return to the cottages for dinner and overnight. A night game drive is also possible here to try to spot the nocturnal, and seldom seen Aardvark.
Day 6 – Spend a full day in the Nakuru National Park doing an extensive game drive in this charming national park that is also a world heritage site. This park is famous for its millions of flamingos, great variety of other birds, leopard and rhino. Return to Nakuru Mbweha Lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 7 - Drive to the Masai Mara and set up camp in the area that is best for the season. Game drive after lunch and enjoy the wonderful wildlife found in this area which is one of the worlds best and most famous game viewing spot. Dinner and overnight at the camp
Day 8 - 9 For two days you will get to explore the Masai Mara area. You may take game walks in the areas outside the Reserve itself, do game drives in the Reserve and on the conservation areas and group ranches that surround the reserve. Here you also have he opportunity to visit local villages and local schools for a cultural immersion into this, probably the most famous of Kenya’s tribes.
With the help of your driver/guide, you may set the pace that suits you best. We suggest spending one full day with the Masai and then return again if you choose. Maybe spend the rest of the time game driving or taking walks as you wish. All meals and overnight at the bush camp Masai Mara.
Day 10 After Breakfast do a last morning drive or nature walk, Drive or fly back to Nairobi or fly directly to Lamu or Malindi/Watamu.
This itinerary you can add as many extra nights in the Masai Mara as you wish and if you feel camel trekking is nothing for you it can be taken out. A day hike on Mt Kenya or a night or two in Meru can be added as well.
