JK Classic 2
Laikipia, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara 10 days/9 nights
Explore the Laikipia plateau in central Kenya: vast open ranches, shadowed by snow-capped Mount Kenya and the largest elephant population in Kenya. Trek through Lakipia with a traditional Samburu camel caravan. Experience the magic of the pink flamingos of Lake Nakuru in the heart of the rift Valley. Finally end up in the majestic Masai Mara with its open savanna, tremendous amount of game and the living culture of the Purko Masai. This is a safari for you who want to explore Kenya.
Day 1 - Drive to Lewa Safari Camp or El Karama Ranch. Enjoy the private ranch’s conservation areas with the guidance of your driver / guide. Day/night drives and walks. Game that can be seen includes elephant, giraffe, large herds of eland, all plains game, including the rare Grevy's zebra, lion, cheetah, black and white rhinos.
Day 2 - Lewa Safari Camp or El Karama. Day/night drives and walks.
Day 3 - After a morning nature walk or game drive and breakfast drive to the start of the camel trek on Ol Donyo Lemburo ranch in the heart of Laikipia. Meet your Samburu guides and have lunch before heading of for the afternoon walk. The camels will carry all equipment as well as luggage. First camp will be set at the waterfall on Sosian Ranch. You stay in comfortable dome tents with camping beds and proper linen. Toilet and shower units as well as a dining, is also set up. Dinner and stories by the campfire under the African skies.
Day 4 - Full day trekking. Half of the camel team will go on ahead to set up the camp for the night while you will ride and walk looking for game. Elephants are plenty in the area so close elephant encounters are very likely. Camp for the evening will be set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro. Dinner and overnight bush camp.
Day 5 - After breakfast, your driver-guide will come and pick you from the campsite and you will drive down into the Great Rift Valley. The drive is fairly long but very scenic and you may stop to visit the local markets and wood carving kiosks if you wish. Arrive the Nakuru area and Mbweha Lodge on the Delemere Estate in time for a late lunch. Do a nature walk in this privately owned Congreve conservancy in the afternoon, then return to the cottages for dinner and overnight. A night game drive is also possible here to try to spot the Aardvark which with a bit of luck you can spot in the area at night.
Day 6 – Spend a full day in the Nakuru National Park doing an extensive game drive. This park is famous for its birds, leopard and rhino. Return to the Mbweha Lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 7 - Drive to the Masai Mara and JK’s Leleshwa tented camp, which will be your home here. Game drive after lunch and enjoy the wonderful wildlife. Dinner and overnight at the camp
Day 8 - 9 For these three days you will get to explore the Mara area. You may do game walks in the areas outside the reserve itself, do game drive in the reserve and on the conservation areas and group ranches that surround the reserve. Here you will also have the opportunity to visit local villages and local schools for a cultural immersion into this, probably the most famous of Kenya’s tribes.
With the help of your driver/guide, you may set the pace to suit you. We would suggest spending one full day with the Masai and then return again if you choose. Then spend the rest of the time game driving or taking walks as you wish. All meals and overnight at the Leleshwa tented camp.
Day 10 After Breakfast morning drive or do a last nature walk. Drive or fly back to Nairobi. It is also possible to fly directly to Lamu or Malindi - Watamu.
To this itinerary you can add as many extra nights in the Masai Mara as you wish and if you feel camel trekking is nothing for you it can be taken out of the program. A day hike at Mt Kenya or a night or two in Meru National Park can be added as well.
